Diversions During Coltsgate Hill Closure

The final part of the West of Market Place Development is to build a new link road from North Street at the junction of Coltsgate Hill. This new road will significantly improve traffic movement in this part of the City. There is no denying the need to improve the Coltsgate Hill Junction as it is currently dangerous for both traffic and pedestrians.

Unfortunately it is necessary to close the Coltsgate Hill junction to build the new link road. This will disrupt traffic movement around the City. Since May 2007 local people have been working with the County and City council to limit the disruption caused by the closure and find some suitable diversions for traffic. It is not easy to find suitable alternatives with such a historic streetscape.

However, the diversions planned at least give us a chance of keeping traffic moving during this period of disruption. We would ask all people driving in Ripon to take some time to consider and understand the diversions and see how it affects their journeys.

To help drivers understand the diversions, maps and commentary have been provided by the County Council that be published in local papers and will also be available on the Visit Ripon website and the Ripon Internet website. Leaflets will also be distributed to help spread the word about the diversionary routes.

There are some key points that are important to highlight:

  1. Encouraging drivers to use the By-Pass whenever possible.
  2. Increasing parking signage on the By-Pass to encourage access to car parks via Rotary Way.
  3. Keeping HGV's on the By-Pass and away from the Market Square.
  4. The more drivers that observe and support the diversions, the more successful they will prove.
  5. Using the By-Pass can actually save you journey time and ease city centre congestion.
  6. All diversions will be clearly signed.
  7. Diversions will be reviewed regularly.
  8. Everybody needs to play their part in keeping the City moving.

The closure of Coltsgate Hill is scheduled to start end of April/Early May and will last for a number of months.

Please make every effort to use the diversionary routes and keep the City moving.

Thank you in advance for your support.
