Free Parking for Ripon Shoppers

Ripon Internet reported back in the middle of April that Ripon was going to commence a brand new parking scheme that will aim to retain the shoppers in Ripon, while the West of the Marketplace development takes place.

The long awaited development, that will see the transformation of a derelict part of town that is currently used as a car park, will be the last piece in the jigsaw towards a brighter future for Ripon. The new development will include a new link road from North Street, a supermarket, new shops, flats and houses, along with a large car park. The development is expected to take 18 months and is due to start at the end of May.

In preparation for the disruption that this development will cause, the independent traders in Ripon came up with the idea to offer free parking to shoppers. This is the first scheme of its kind in the area and was approved by the Harrogate Borough Council. The free parking scheme is set to start on the 24th May and there are already signs appearing in Ripon.

So how does it all work?

As from the 24th May, when you park your car in one of the many car parks in Ripon the machine will issue you with 2 tickets rather than just one. This may confuse you at first but there will be signs detailing the scheme at the pay points. The idea of the free parking is that you leave one ticket in your car and take the extra ticket with you when you go shopping.

At present there are 20 retailers who are part of the scheme who will be displaying the free parking posters in their shop windows. If you spend more that £5.00 in one of the participating shops you will be refunded your parking costs up to the value of £0.80, which is equivalent to 2 hours parking.

This is a great move by the independent businesses in Ripon to help the regular shoppers in Ripon, and also to help attract new shoppers. New and old shoppers alike will be surprised that you can actually get everything that you are looking for in Ripon.
