Locked Up - Heritage Open Day
Explore Ripon’s three museums free of charge as part of the Heritage Open Day Festival. This year’s theme is ‘LOCKED UP”: explore what it meant to be shut in behind the high walls and bars of Ripon’s infamous institutions. Visit the Prison & Police Museum to see how Ripon policing has changed through time and then get face to face with some gruesome historic punishments. Discover the Courthouse Museum where convicts would have been found guilty and awaited their sentence and visit the Workhouse Museum; many poor Victorian families turned to it when there was nowhere else to go but not everyone would leave.

Louise Marchal: Noble Bloods
Contemporary artist Louise Marchal pays tribute to nineteenth century sculptor Frances Darlington, in a multi-media installation for the chapel of Ripon’s Prison and Police Museum.
'Noble Bloods' commemorates the World War One centenary and will be shown alongside Darlington’s sculpture, the St. George's Police Orphanage World War One Memorial completed in 1918.

Great North Art Show
The Great North Art Show in Ripon Cathedral is annual open exhibition showcasing the diversity and depth of contemporary art in the North of England by professional artists, in a magnificent and unique setting. Alongside the main show, there will be the "Art of Portraiture in the North" as a special exhibition to raise the profile of portrait painting.
