Ripon City Photographic Society Annual Photography Exhibition

Ripon City Photographic Society is holding their Annual Photography Exhibition on Saturday, 5th September 2015 at Allhallowgate Methodist Church, Victoria Grove, Ripon, HG4 1LG. The exhibition is open from 9.30am to 4pm with an official opening by The Right Worshipful, the Mayor of Ripon, Councillor Pauline McHardy at 10am. Members’ previously un-exhibited work in print and digital format will be on view. Admission is free and open to all although there will be opportunity to make a voluntary retiring donation if you wish. You can vote for your favourite print or digital image in the display and one lucky winner will be drawn from all entries at our first meeting of the season and be able to select a print of their choice. In addition there will be home-made cakes and drinks available so you can rest, relax and chat. The one-level venue is fully accessible to all and is opposite the bus station in the centre of Ripon. There are pay and display car parks next to and almost opposite the church near to Sainsbury’s Supermarket.
Don't just come for the exhibition though – Ripon and its environs offer a wonderful variety of photo opportunities. Quite apart from our famous Cathedral, the city is also unique in having a fabulous Law and Order Trail with the Old Workhouse, the Old Court House and the Police and Prison Museum. All are within a few minutes walking distance of the exhibition venue. We have great architecture in and around the City centre and also at the Edwardian Spa Baths next to the Spa Park Gardens. Here there is a multi-trunked tree that has been reduced in height, with each trunk being sculpted into a character from Alice in Wonderland. If you still want more food or drink after sampling our fare in the exhibition, we have some great independent coffee shops – for example, Oliver's Pantry, The Rolling Pin, Chinerys, plus some of the more well known high street names. Ripon is also the northernmost point of the canal system and there are splendid walks by the canal side as well as opportunity to have a trip on it. Don’t miss peering into the Ripon Marina with its colourful craft and perhaps catch some pictures of boats negotiating locks and being framed by humpback bridges. Further afield there is Fountains Abbey (free to National Trust members) and Newby Hall and Gardens (free to members of the Historic Houses Association). If you decide to, as our city signs suggest, ‘stay awhile amidst its ancient charms’ you can wine and dine in any number of a variety of eating places or just enjoy fish and chips in paper before witnessing the Ripon Hornblower performing the setting of the watch at 9pm. He blows his horn on the four corners of the obelisk on the Market Square, thus assuring residents of their safety, a tradition that has gone on, unbroken, since 866!

Our new Jurassic Adventure Golf course is scheduled to open at May Half Term 2015. New for 2015 - join us for the ultimate golfing adventure at Lightwater Valley*. Dinosaurs and man, two species separated by sixty-five million years of evolution, have suddenly been thrown back into the mix together. Fierce Raptors, giant Triceratops and the mighty T-Rex all roam this hostile section of the theme park and golfing with dinosaurs has never been so much fun. With just a club and a small white ball for protection, swap your birdies for Pterodactyls and rise to the challenge of making Jurassic pars as you navigate your way through 18 holes of dense North Yorkshire undergrowth and water hazards inhabited by terrifying predators (the dinosaurs, not your playing partners). Whether you happen to be an expert golfer or have never held a putter before, try not to be distracted by the Stegosaurus in the crowd as months of gloating could be yours by sinking that winning putt on the 18th green. *An additional charge applies to play our new Jurassic Adventure Golf Course.
