MARK SWINTON was born in Chester and educated at the King's School, where he sang in the Schola Cantorum at services in Chester Cathedral and began his organ studies with Roger Fisher. He studied for the Music degrees at the University of York, continuing organ studies with Dr Roger Tebbet, John Scott Whiteley and Dr Francis Jackson. He also served as Organ Scholar at Selby Abbey. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and in addition to recitals throughout the UK (including the Cathedrals at Bradford, Bristol, Chester, Hereford, Portsmouth, Ripon, Sheffield, St Albans, Truro and York as well as Christchurch Priory and Reading Town Hall) he has performed in France, Spain and Holland both as a soloist and an accompanist.

In 2003, he was appointed Organist at Clifton College, Bristol, where he played for daily Chapel services, accompanied the Chapel Choirs in concerts, tours and Cathedral visits to Lichfield and Salisbury in addition to their regular round of services, and masterminded a recital series featuring the College's splendid 1911 Harrison organ. His own recitals there included complete performances of Messiaen's La Nativite du Seigneur and L'Ascension, as well as the first performance of a work written for him by the Yorkshire composer Bryan Boulter.

In 2005 he became Assistant Organist at Bath Abbey, where he shared in accompanying and directing the acclaimed Choirs of Boys, Girls and Men under the direction of Dr Peter King. He made numerous appearances in the Abbey's recital series, accompanied Choir tours to Alkmaar and Aix-en-Provence, and recorded a CD Colours of the Klais (Cloister Records) to help mark the 10th anniversary of the Abbey's magnificent Klais Organ. In addition to his duties at the Abbey, Mark was also Accompanist to the Chantry Singers and at the Royal High School, Bath.

He succeeded Hugh Davies as Director of Music at Kendal Parish Church, and as Director of the Kendal South Choir, in 2008. There, he has responsibility for the Church’s two choirs: the professional robed Choir of Boys and Men which sings at two services each Sunday, and the voluntary Congregational Choir which sings mainly at the Parish Communion service on Sunday mornings. He is also fortunate to preside over two organs, a three-manual Willis/Walker of 1969 and a two-manual Bevington of 1874.

He is engaged to Holly, a Primary School Teacher and graduate of Royal Holloway, University of London. When not busy with musical activities, he enjoys the countryside, rail travel (which enables him to see plenty of excellent countryside both in this country and abroad) and cookery.
