Say it with Sunflowers

SAY IT WITH SUNFLOWERS JULY 2015

Throughout July Open Garden event Sunday July 19 2015, 10am-12pm

Dedicating a sunflower this summer is a way to celebrate and remember the life of someone special – whilst making a difference to others.

When you make your dedication, your special someone will have their own sunflower plaque displayed in the beautiful gardens of Saint Michael’s Hospice this summer.

You’ll be invited to come and see our bright sea of sunflowers, including your own special dedication, at an open garden event on Sunday July 19, 10am – 12pm. During this time you, family and friends can enjoy a coffee and cake together with volunteers and staff from Saint Michael's and Just 'B'.

To take part simply return your dedication form which is available on the website, by e mail or by telephone and return to Saint Michael's with your donation, by Friday July 10.

Your sunflower will remain in the hospice grounds until the end of August. Tel: 01423 878192 Email: events@saintmichaelshopsice.org http://www.saintmichaelshospice.org/fundraising/events/say-it-with-sunflowers

Concert in Ripon Cathedral

Concert in Ripon Cathedral

The City of Leeds Youth Orchestra (CLYO), representing the very best, young orchestral talent in the city, will be showcasing their classical music talents at Ripon Cathedral on Friday 17th July (7.30pm to 9.15am).

The orchestra, comprised of over 100 young people between the ages of 13 and 18, will be performing Gurney’s War Elegy, Mozart’s Violin Concerto Number 3 in G, Samson and Delilah by Saint-Saens and Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony in what will be their final concert of the year.

Founded over 40 years ago, the CLYO is currently headed up by Principal Conductor Dougie Scarfe who has long musical history in the region and further afield, including four years with Opera North.

Dougie commented: “Ripon Cathedral is a magnificent setting for a concert and the orchestra is looking forward to the event which we hope will capture the imagination of local people keen to experience Yorkshire’s rich musical future.”

Lockwoods restaurant - Summer garden festival

Lockwoods restaurant - Summer garden festival

For the past 4 years Lockwoods has worked closely with the Ripon workhouse museum and their heritage garden project. Matthew and his kitchen team use the amazing produce over the summer months incorporating it in to the menus at the restaurant. This allows people who have been to the museum and seen the vegetables to then taste them at the table. Field to fork in a little over 200 yards.

The summer garden festival menu celebrates this. A whole week of summer garden blackboard specials featuring the best produce from our local workhouse museum garden and other locally sourced produce. Think of summer days, marinated grilled meats, luscious ripe, fruit and vegetables. A plethora of reds, yellows, oranges and greens whetting your appetite.

Get Set for Volunteering FREE 6 week course

Get Set for Volunteering FREE 6 week course

Would you like to get involved in volunteering but don’t know where to start?

Perhaps your confidence has taken a knock or you feel you need a little support to get up and running? Harrogate and Ripon’s Volunteer Centre is running a FREE short course to help you get started.

Who is it for? Anyone interested in volunteering but would to know more about what’s involved and the types of roles in the area. We particularly welcome people with physical disabilities or sensory impairments, both of which are underrepresented in volunteering.

What does it cover? This short six week course helps you to identify your skills, experience, and interests and explores what volunteering opportunities are available locally based on your needs. We take you through the basics on how to apply, training and support and you get to ask questions and find out more before deciding whether you wish to volunteer.

When is it? Our small, friendly group will meet once a week between 1.00-3.00pm from 11th June to 16th July at Harrogate Community House. How do I book my FREE place? Either phone Carol Gaiger in the Volunteer Centre on 01423 509004 or email her at volunteer@harcvs.org.uk. You can also book online at www.getsetjune2015.eventbrite.com/?aff=riponevent
