Freecycle is a nonprofit internet-based group, which was founded in March 2003 by Deron Beal. The goal of Freecycle is to help reduce “unwanted” items from ending up in our landfills and into the hands of someone who could use the item. The worldwide Freecycle Network is made up of many individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving & getting items for free in their own towns. Volunteers monitor the group to ensure that the group rules are being followed. The main rule of Freecycle is everything must be free.

riponNYFreecycle@yahoogroups.com is the local branch of this group, and we are looking to forge links with small businesses and shops, alongside the local community, to address the problem of recycling. A local brewery gives spent hops to gardeners, a woodworker gives scrap wood to make bird-boxes or firewood. It couldn’t be simpler. NO MONEY CHANGES HAND, yet every one benefits. We also have links to other organisations, and old hand tools go to make an African man Self-Reliant and proud, old bicycles, and even parts and spanners, go to Africa so that a child doesn’t have to walk 10-15 miles a day. The possibilities are endless, all it takes is time.
