Winifred Hodge, Nancy Murgatroyd and Sarah Venus Art Selling Exhibition at Hornseys - ‘the gallery’, 3 Kirkgate, Ripon

New works on display by popular Yorkshire artists Winifred Hodge,Nancy Murgatroyd and Sarah Venus. Winifred Hodge uses spontaneous and exciting techniques with mixed media, the work powerfully evokes the British landscape tradition, but in a distinctly modern and unique way. The low sun of the winter months, the richness of colour on bleak, solitary Dales moorland proves a challenge and inspiration for her work. Nancy Murgatroyd works in painting and textiles, her subjects reflect a deep fascination with nature, particularly plants, flowers and our relationship to them. The viewer is drawn close to subjects seeing them in a new way. She delights in colour. Recent paintings are inspired by freshly harvested produce on show. Sarah Venus’s textile works combine felt with a variety of contrasting materials including rubber to produce thought provoking and tactile pieces. Her lino prints follow similar themes. The inspirations spring from natural forms, their interactions and tensions. Alongside these artists will be ‘the gallery’s unique collection of 20th Century Modern Masters.

"Pictures of People" Art Exhibition, Lockwoods Cafebar and Restaurant

Renowned Ripon artist David Stead is well known for uncompromisingly drawn, multilayered impasto oils of northern landscapes, and has recently also turned his attention to the citizens of Ripon. ‘Pictures of People’ is David’s most ambitious and challenging exhibition and a huge undertaking. By September he will have produced over a hundred portraits ranging from oils on canvas and charcoal drawings, to smaller works of multi-media and pen drawings.

David said “this is as much a social document and interactive event as an exhibition; we are using the walls of Lockwoods to involve the wider community of Ripon. The end of the summer will see many faces familiar to all who live and work in the city.”

In addition, David has created two large oil canvases for Lockwoods. These are bright, bold and vibrant paintings of Ripons Market Square and Racecourse, which observe the rich mix of traditional and contemporary imagery in these environments.

Matthew Lockwood said “Our aim is to create a refreshing experience of traditional flavours in a relaxed contemporary setting. In line with this we have adapted our colour scheme and lighting in order to showcase “Pictures of People” to best effect. This has given the restaurant a more intimate feel and puts us firmly at the heart of the community of Ripon”.
